When COVID put the world on hold, I wanted to continue with the youth education programs that I created for Paisley Blues Festival (Top Youth Initiative award- Festivals and Events Ontario, Blues for Youth 2019). With in-person contact eliminated, I had to get creative. After discussions with stakeholders, we went ahead and purchased 30 Electric Guitars and Amps, Fender brand. Fender, the legendary guitar company, then gave us 30 free Fender Play accounts, a fantastic online learning platform created by the company. This meant that youth could sign out a guitar and amp, free, for 3 months, and have free access to an online learning platform that they could access from the safety and comfort of their own home. I created partnerships with the Aaron Roote Memorial Youth Centre in Saugeen First Nation, Big Brothers/Sisters Grey Bruce, and the Bruce Grey Mentorship Program to get these guitars out and into the hands of kids that could really benefit from the program.
